Homework

The three texts that I have studied are Game Of Thrones, I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Saturday Night Football. All of these texts us marketing and content to attract their audience. An example of marketing for Game Of Thrones is the trailer for season 6 is shown regularly on TV, this will help to attract an audience as it makes the viewers aware of what time it will be shown at and on what channel. The time that it is shown at will also help to attract an audience. It is shown at 9pm on a Monday, it is shown at this time after the watershed due to it's adult themes, graphic violence and nudity. The content of Game Of Thrones helps to attract an audience because it gives the viewer what they want to see, this is called comfortable reassurance. The audience expects to see things such as dragons, swords and fighting as it is of the fantasy genre and the audience want to feel like it is offering them an escape from their life. An example of the content in action is in the episode titled 'Hardhome' which is the 9th episode of the 5th series. It showed a giant battle between the undead and humans which had everything that the audience expected.

I'm a celebrity get me out of here uses content and marketing to attract it's audience. I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here is aired Saturday to the next Sunday at 9pm on ITV 1. This is because of the adult content that it shows so it is on past the watershed. The content of the show appeals to it’s audiences by showing celebrities in difficult trials that they wouldn’t do anywhere else. Another part of the content of that appeals to the audiences is the comedy. The hosts Ant & Dec often make fun of everything they see on the show which appeals to the audience because they want something to laugh at. This is comfortable reassurance because Ant & Dec year on year host the programme and add a comedic element to the show, they also use direct address to make the audience feel like they are a part of the show. Interactivity plays a part in the attraction of the audience because the audience vote as to who completes the trials and who stays/goes. This makes the audience feel like they are in control of the show and will help to attract a larger audience, this is different to Game Of Thrones are when an episode is aired there isn't any interactivity whilst the show is ongoing.

Saturday Night Football also uses very intense advertising to attract it's audience. They use a variety of online advertisements, TV Ads and print adverts. These help to attract an audience as they show what teams are playing and often word the adverts so it looks like it is a battle between the two teams. The aspect of the content of Saturday Night Football that attracts the audience the most is simply the football that is being played as this offers the entertainment. The commentator also plays a vital role in attracting an audience. They use rhetorical questions regularly to keep the audience interested and this causes the audience to ask questions themselves. Interactivity plays a big part in Saturday Night Football as pressing the red button allows the viewer to look at highlights of the game so far, view statisitistics and historical information about the two teams, this interactivity is catered to the hardcore football fans rather than the causual viewer as they wont be interested in information in that detail.

Easter Homework

Game Of Thrones

The show is aired in America on a Sunday night at 9pm on HBO, which is a paid subscription service meaning that it isn’t available to everyone. Due to its increased popularity Sky Atlantic now air it the day after at 9pm although this is also a subscription service. It is aired at 9pm in the UK due to it’s adult content with graphic violence and nudity however during the day on Sky Atlantic re-runs are shown of previous episode which are only able to view if the viewer puts a security pin in, this will stop young children from accidentally viewing it.

The content of game of thrones appeals to its audience, as it is fantasy, it offers the viewers an alternate world to the one that they live in which appeals to a lot of people. The high profile stars such as Emelia Clarke and Sean Bean also appeal to their audiences as people who are fans of their previous work will more than likely watch the programme. This is also shown in the marketing for the programme as they use a very aggressive marketing strategy with posters with the top billed cast.

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here is aired Saturday to the next Sunday at 9pm on ITV 1. This is because of the adult content that it shows so it is on past the watershed. It is available to anyone with a TV as it is on the terrestrial channel ITV. Another thing that increases it’s availability is it’s not locked behind a paywall because it’s a free channel. The show is also available on ITV Player which is a catch-up service offered by ITV which is also free and all you need is an internet connection to watch it or alternatively you could download the app.

The audience participation also appeals to the audience as it’s their choice who takes part in the trails and they vote who stays in the show or goes. This gives them a sense of power as they are the ones who control it.

Paper Analysis

Newspaper Analysis

For the paper that I created I decided to use the John Terry news story as I believe that it is what the ideal for the paper would want to read about and would attract them to buy the paper, another reason for me choosing this article is that typically the readers of red top newspapers are patriotic and Terry is an extremely patriotic football player and ex England captain which will appeal to the ideal reader.

His interests which include going to the pub and betting on horse and football racing made me include the advert for a sign up offer for a betting company. This will attract the ideal reader to purchase the newspaper because they will be interested in the betting aspect of it along with the horse racing.
I chose the headline for the John Terry article, as it is two syllables long, which is ideal for the newspaper as red top papers reading age is very low which makes them easy to read.

I chose to include the story about beer prices being increased by George Osborne as this would affect him as he goes to the pub regularly. Another article I included was the news that Bruce Forsyth will host the TV show Strictly Come Dancing again, this will interest him because the ideal reader doesn’t have Sky therefore he will be restricted to watching the freeview channels which will therefore interest him if it is something that he watches. For the headline of this article I used a low amount of syllables to make it easier for the ideal reader to read.

News Values

"Find two stories from each daily national newspaper you have brought and outline which news values are present in them"

The Guardian:

‘Cuts blamed as mental health death toll soars’

Immediacy – New reveal that the cuts are being blamed as the reason for the deaths due to mental health.

Nearness- Involves people involved in the NHS and people who are effected by mental health.

Consequence – It will affect people that are in UK as it is part of the NHS which is a national health service and something that everyone uses.

Conflict - This story has conflict between the government and the NHS.

Human Interest - It involves human interest as mental health issues can effect anyone.

The Sun:

'Story about a woman claiming to have won the lottery but she accidentally put her ticket in the wash'

Immediacy - This news is new because it was in the immediate aftermath of one of the biggest lotteries of the past few years.

Nearness - It involves people and places known to the reader as the story is about the lottery in the UK.

Consequence - The news affects all the readers because if she is lying then she would have taken the money potentially of someone else in the UK.

Suspense - The article doesn't mention if she has actually has the winning ticket and it creates suspense.

Oddity - This story is odd because it is an extremely large amount of money and it is unheard of for someone to lose their ticket and get it back.

Magnitude - It is shocking as she might be trying to defraud the people who run the lottery.

"On balance, given the content across the whole newspaper, which news value would you say are the most important to this newspaper. Give a reason for your answer"

I think that human interest is the most important news value to The Guardian because the readers are typically most interested in things that will affect their day to day lives like things to do with politics and business decisions, this is different in comparison to The Sun as they focus on

Regulation of Film

BBFC is the British board of film classification. It has a code of practice and guidelines that film makers must adhere to. The film makers follow these rules and the film is made, the film is then sent to the BBFC to be regulated to release. The BBFC watch the film, certify it and then ask the film makers to make cuts, the film is then reclassified and then released, but the rating of the film is not final as it can change for DVD release. However if a member of the audience doesn't like it then they can make complaints to the BBFC. The BBFC also use this process for certifying trailers.

The certificate for Guardians of the Galaxy is a 12a in the UK and has a similar rating everwhere else in the world. It has this rating because of the intense sequences of sci fi violence and for some of the language used. Skyfall is also rated a 12A for its intense violence sequences, sexuality, language and smoking used throughout. The Dark Knight is rated a 12A in the UK because of it's intense sequences of violence and some menace.
